It was amazing to walk into the Mount Pleasant Police Department in September. I expected to find a very military-like atmosphere; what I found was welcoming officers with smiles on their faces.
The goal of their academy was to inform the citizens about how it works, how it trains policemen for safety, use of force, ethics, emergency operations, officer wellness, crime investigation and much more. It was a wonderful, organized program, hearing from officers and other specialists who help train the men and women in the department.
This year’s academy is now completed, and was held every Tuesday evening for three months. Each evening, I looked forward to the class, learning something new each time. I got to know many of our instructors and realized that they are just people like you and me. The difference is their huge responsibility to keep all of us safe. Now I feel so much more respect and appreciation for what they do and must face each day on the job.

This class did not train us to be policemen, but gave us understanding. I send a big thank you to all the officers who worked and taught at this academy.
